However, when someone is in your house bullies and racists are punished, which adds an interesting moral component to the story. And that for the audience too: As a viewer, should one condemn the act or applaud if the “right one” gets caught here? It is at least a bit of a crowdpleaser when hideous people have to pay for what they do. It also increases curiosity as to which disgusting people may come to light with the next victim – and who will derive a killing order from them.
Unfortunately, this aspect is not carried through consistently enough. With the third murder, the adaptation of the eponymous novel by Stephanie Perkins deviates from this path. So much so that one wonders: Did I just miss something? And that’s just the beginning, as it progresses, someone in your house is increasingly arbitrary. The killer’s behavior makes less and less sense. The breakup itself is quite a slap in the face in fact. If the film were at least aware of its own absurdity. Somehow, however, you were trying to pull through a serious subject and say something while at the same time everything was completely overdone.
