The plot takes the basic idea of Nightmare at 20,000 Feet the cult episode of Twilight Zone and gives it a facelift. A hybrid between a horrific camera and a feminist action film Shadow benefits from a formidable staging. This one is put at the service of a metaphor which initially seems quite minimalist before taking an unexpected turn towards a third act excessive at will.
It is at this point that Shadow in the Cloud is transformed into an absolutely insane action film, whose unbridled energy is revealed to the rhythm of a synthase soundtrack. Roseanne Liang uses the unique perspective of the cockpit of an old bomber to provide shots of the skies that are both sublime and chilling.
A good part of the plot takes place in the tiny cabin where our protagonist lets himself be locked up. Liang has an impressive amount of great ideas to make this closed-door dynamic and claustrophobic. We anguish in this tiny space in the company of Chloe Grace Martez ( Carrie 2013), solid in a bad ass character whose value, abilities and credibility are called into question by a concert of male voices. Accepting to be shelved for the sake of her mission, she will learn assertiveness in a series of absolutely spectacular sequences that the last part of the film has in store for us.
