Even if the word here could be a bit inappropriate, after all, “Old” is by no means a feel-good movie. However, those who have already seen a lot, like to dig deeper than just scratching the surface, have high standards or even see themselves as a cineast , probably have more of a problem with the film.
Shyamalan’s thriller is very unusual and brave enough to break new ground, but at the same time it sometimes overshoots the mark on the one hand, while on the other it does not even begin to reach a minimum level . As interesting as the premise is, there is a lack of implementation in front and behind, in the middle and almost everywhere else. The list of negative points of criticism is unusually long, but the arguments in favor of “Old” are disappointingly short.
On the pro side, the film primarily scores the unusual idea , which at least quickly generates interest and in this way hardly knows any competing works. So if you just want to see something new, you’ve come to the right place. In addition, the thriller can still be credited with the fact that at least the partially stuck procedures in Hollywood are often broken and one has dared to break new ground.
All the other compliments that I could still give “Old” would have been drawn from a long way off and ultimately hardly matter. Unfortunately, most of this film lives only from its uniqueness and has little or nothing to offer apart from that. Above all, discerning moviegoers will be disappointed, as the quality is sometimes reminiscent of over-ambitious low-budget productions.
