This is a man who works in the oil industry and spends much of his life abroad. Contact with his family is sporadic. But now Edmond is determined to patch up the critical situation his son is going through. The first suspect is the partner of his ex-wife Joan (Claire Foy), the meek Frank (Tom Cullen).
A first problem with the film is that, for a suspense thriller, it happens very little. Edmond’s character is revealed little by little, but the information that is hidden is neither surprising nor fundamental. He is someone who works abroad and neglected the upbringing of his son. On the other hand, the revelations that take place later in the plot completely discard any type of construction that had been started from the beginning of the film.
What remains is a long journey through the figure of Edmond’s character. An absent father who tries to remedy his lack. My They are part of the same premise as the stories popularized by Liam Neeson (whose characters are always kidnapped by a relative and must be rescued) but it develops with a soporific seriousness, without the slightest comic or playful wink.
From the visual, it results in a lighting plagued by shadows, which seeks to highlight the dark path that the protagonist must travel. The long close-ups that follow the characters are closer to generating boredom than tension or suspense. In My Son there is not much to rescue beyond the beautiful Scottish landscapes.
