House of Dragons is the title of HBO’s most recent adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood.” The events took place 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born. The story begins in Westeros, when King Jaehaerys Targaryen was in decline and looking for a replacement. That’s what he knew: if he didn’t name a ruler before his death, the entire realm could fall, and there would be battles.
He knew that the only thing that could bring the incredible domain down was an internal battle. Thus, 14 claims for progression were made throughout the line, and only two were considered: Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her cousin Prince Viserys Targaryen. Viserys was chosen as the new King of the Iron Throne because the Targaryen line was a male-dominated realm, and no woman was deemed worthy of the lofty position.
