It has something of Starship Troopers (1997), without Verhoeven’s bad milk, if only because of the form of “bugs” of the invaders. It is also related to Edge of Tomorrow (2014), in the idea of a human militia facing aliens in a global war, although without time loops. And there are some collateral kinships with Independence Day (1996) or Spielberg’s version of The War of the Worlds (2005).
The good news is that Tomorrow’s War digests many of these influences without going too often on autopilot. In fact, the weakest part is the last act, but up to that point the movie is fairly diligent. The portrait he makes of the unfortunate 2051 is most effective. The first images of the future are dark and ominous, just as the recruits are released amidst dilapidated buildings by a painful landing.
One of the positives is that the action scenes are forceful and effective. What together with the certainly repellent design of aliens, makes some moments have strength and some capacity to overwhelm. In several aspects the script follows the logic of a video game, where phases of different aspects are passed . The same there are commando missions, that missions of attack, rescue, etc. In such a way, that the spectacularity is not going to be a problem.
