Beth is further motivated to solve this mystery when she begins to hear strange noises, doors close on their own and her sound system suddenly plays their favorite song in the middle of the night. Beth also has strange dreams. Could it be Owen, who has been left as a ghost trying to communicate with her? Or is it a different presence, with different intentions?
At first glance, THE NIGHT HOUSE simply seems to follow the usual path that so many haunted house stories have already done. Take the taglines for example; “ Get out of the house ” and “ The truth will surface ”. You can certainly apply that to forty percent of all horror films ever made. I especially thought of the Netflix miniseries THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE(2018), where the camera work also made great use of the background. HILL HOUSE placed ghosts in all sorts of nooks and crannies for the observant viewer, while THE NIGHT HOUSE, on the other hand, keeps the frame empty and open. Rebecca Hall is filmed with shot-reverse shot, with no one to have a conversation with.
In this way, we become convinced that something is constantly with her, even in her complete self-isolation. It’s also not set in an imposing Shirley Jackson-inspired mansion, but a cozy lakeside log home specially designed by Owen. Because her husband built it for her with his own hands, Beth found it difficult to leave the house behind. It must be her imagination that she sees an identical house on the other side of the lake.
