For many moments, the screenwriters and Macdonald manage to get the message they want out efficiently, but these scenes continue for a few extra minutes that don’t really add anything new to the story, the characters or the atmosphere. Although the main narrative is about Slahi, these subplots involving secondary characters are far from being remotely interesting. If it weren’t for an ever captivating Benedict Cumberbatch and a charming Shailene Woodley, some of these narrative lines could have hurt the film more than anticipated.
One of the most important moments of the film occurs at the beginning of the third act. While it is vital for audiences to experience the same horrors that Slahi had to endure, this too long sequence goes from purely shocking to genuinely uncomfortable, to the point where some viewers really skip ahead. It falls into the problem above of not knowing when to finish a scene, extending it too much, and consequently increasing the already substantial duration. However, I remained totally focused on the central story partly due to the remarkable performances of Jodie Foster and, especially, Tahar Rahim.
