The Swiss-German co-production, which premiered at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, takes us to a rather distant future – one in which we managed to destroy the Blue Planet enough to make it necessary to escape beyond its borders. As is usual, however, in the struggle for survival, only the earthly elite went on an expedition towards a new home – a colony in the Kepler 209 system. Now, almost two generations later, space travelers are trying to return to Earth – but the question they should ask themselves is not so much how to do it, but rather whether they should try at all.
Tim Fehlbaum, who is behind the camera of “The Colony”, has already had an adventure with apocalyptic science fiction, thanks to the quite good “Hell” from 2011. However, while the full-length debut from a decade ago sold us a vision of a short-range future, the Swiss director’s new film as the word was said in creating the dark future of our genre goes much further – which does not mean that in the construction of the plot we should expect a breakthrough at this point. The very first scenes of “The Colony” can evoke a sense of a certain deja vu, especially among people familiar with the genre. “Water world” or “Elysium” are just dry examples – the most important from the viewer’s point of view, however, is that if we have already encountered the themes of colonial fantasy, class inequalities and rebellion of the little ones, there can be no question of any sensations.
However, Fehlbaum should be given the fact that he is well aware of a certain kind of repetitiveness of the material and does not try to reinvent the wheel, focusing primarily on a proven message. “The Colony” adequately reinforces the standard threads with the lingering questions about the limits of morality and whether the survival of the species is a goal that can justify the means.
