It may be that it’s only three years since she passed away, but with such an eventful life, there is plenty to tackle. From a far too young pregnancy, a father who paced her, a violent husband and an alcohol abuse , then all the classical elements that we know from the music biography are present. But it’s as if the film never really gets in depth with some of these elements, so instead they remain clichés.

You can clearly feel the reverence around this amazing singer, which is either due to a huge awe of her, or it is because the film was shot right after she passed away. I should not be able to say what the basis is, but the portrait of Ree, as her family calls her, is a very square one of a kind. All the flaws that color a real human being are very easily waved away, except when the people around her refer to her ‘inner demon’.

The film works best when it follows the template that you probably know from the vast majority of music biographies. We follow the musician from a very young age, are with them when they are discovered and find their voice in and outside the music studio, after which they get rooted in a lot of personal problems, but luckily the end can be saved by singing a song while pictures by the real musician is displayed on the screen. This narrative structure has been reused countless times, most recently in Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, and it is with good reason because it works. The drama is captivating, fascinating and inviting, even for those who have not studied film and media studies at university, but if you do not cram any content into this template, then it all undeniably ends up being very predictable.
