And just talking heads is so dull too. Director Smith therefore has actors act out the transcripts. Full Metal Jacket veteran Matthew Modine takes on the role of protagonist Singer, while on the phone he assures all kinds of lawyers, businessmen and celebrities that their descendants will join the best learning institutions in the country.
Applications are then falsified, test scores manipulated. And money ends up in the pockets of Singer, sports coaches at universities and sometimes the academy itself. We get to see how the counterfeiter started, built an extensive clientele and eventually ran into the lamp. The reenactment of the telephone conversations does have a small disadvantage for the narration: he has not been overheard from the start of his scam. It does reveal the wide range of his practices, but part of the documentary becomes more of an enumeration than a narrative. And that part seems a bit structured.
