The rights to the movie were bought in 2011 by Lionsgate Entertainment and it has taken until now to finally release this movie. The recordings started in 2017 and in 2019 there was finally a first cut, but the test audience already thought it was a terrible affair at the time . As a result, director Fede Alvarez , who himself is working on the script of Don’t Breathe 2 , was brought in to save the day with a pack of reshoots . But that is such a thankless task and in many cases reshoots by another director are often problematic because such a thing will also create a change of tone (cf. Justice League), regardless of the structural problems. The production budget was far exceeded and given the pandemic and the lack of a really wide release, this film is already doomed to fail.
It is of course possible that the film feels so incoherent because of the director change and the fact that it all took so long, but the choice to focus more on chases instead of character development has not really helped either. There is also no sense of urgency. We see Todd and Viola fleeing from one settlement to another, but we know nothing about the planet or the natives (the Spackles) who are out to kill humans. They don’t get nearly enough backstory. Without any nuance (and this film has none), their presence remains an inconspicuous side effect. Although Chaos Walkingmaybe not a bad movie, it’s messy and actually unimaginative. But worse could have been a good film, provided the filmmakers wanted to dig just a little deeper, with more background story, better elaborated themes and relationships between characters that have a tangible effect. The film was released in the States on March 5, 2021 and should probably be released in the foreseeable future. The day before yesterday the film was also shown at our northern neighbors.
